Cookie policy

In short

Most of the cookies on this site are needed for it to work: to keep you signed in, to protect sign-in with Google and to remember your language. Google Analytics and Joinsight add cookies and storage to measure visits, but only if you accept them in the banner. No advertising cookies.

Cookies the site needs

Cookie What it does How long it stays When it is set
__Host-sid Keeps you signed in. It is HttpOnly (no script on the page can read it), only sent over an encrypted connection and only to this site. 30 days, or until you sign out When you sign in
oauth_google Protects sign-in with Google against forgery by holding a one-time security value. 10 minutes, deleted when you come back from Google Only if you choose to sign in with Google
locale Remembers the language of the site. 1 year When you visit the site or change the language
Cookie What it does How long it stays When it is set
_ga Set by Google Analytics. Holds a random identifier, so repeat visits from the same browser are recognised. 13 months after your last visit Only after you accept analytics cookies
_ga_K85HFJKJ85 Set by Google Analytics. Keeps track of your current visit. 13 months after your last visit Only after you accept analytics cookies

Joinsight keeps these in your browser's storage rather than in cookies, also only with your consent:

Storage What it does How long it stays When it is set
js_aid Local storage. A random identifier, so a visit from before you sign up can be linked to your account. Until you withdraw your consent, or we ask for it again after 6 months Only after you accept analytics cookies
js_consent Local storage. Remembers that you accepted. Until you withdraw your consent, or we ask for it again after 6 months Only after you accept analytics cookies
js_s Session storage. Makes sure a visit is recorded only once. Until you close the tab Only after you accept analytics cookies

If you reject analytics cookies, Google Analytics is not loaded at all and Joinsight stores nothing on your device. If you accept and change your mind later, we remove these cookies and this storage from your browser.

Other storage on your device

  • The generator form (IndexedDB). While you sign in or go to payment, your browser keeps your photos and choices on your device so you do not lose them. Nothing is sent to us until you press the button to make your photo. The saved form is used for at most 2 hours and is removed once your result is made or when you start over.
  • Your saved photos (IndexedDB). Once your photos have been uploaded, your browser keeps a copy of them on your device, linked to your account, so they are filled in next time. They are removed 30 days after their first upload, or sooner when you remove them, choose different photos, sign out or delete your account.
  • Your cookie choice (local storage). Your answer to the cookie banner is kept in your browser for 6 months, so we do not ask you on every page.
  • Favourite names (local storage). If you save favourite names in the baby name tool, they are kept in your browser, on your device only.
  • The face check. The face detector that gives you instant photo tips is downloaded from our site and runs in your browser. Your photo is not sent anywhere for this check.

The bot check on sign-in

When you ask for a sign-in code, Cloudflare Turnstile checks that you are a person and not a bot. It is loaded only on the sign-in step and processes technical information about your browser and your IP address for that purpose only.

Analytics

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits to our pages. It does not use cookies or other storage on your device and does not follow you across other websites.

If you accept analytics cookies, we also use Google Analytics to see which pages and tools are useful. Its advertising features are switched off. What it collects is described in our privacy policy.

We use Joinsight to learn which pages and posts bring the people who create an account. Its script loads on every page, but without your consent it stores nothing on your device: it only remembers, in the open page, how you arrived, and passes that on if you create an account. What it receives is described in our privacy policy.

Your choice

The law requires your consent for cookies that are not strictly necessary. The cookies the site needs and the other storage described above are used to provide what you ask for (signing in, keeping your form, remembering your language), so they do not need consent. The analytics cookies do, so we ask before setting them.

The first time you visit, a banner asks whether you accept analytics cookies. Rejecting is as easy as accepting, and the site works the same either way. You can change your choice at any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page. We keep your answer for 6 months, then ask again.

Managing cookies

You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings. If you block the __Host-sid cookie, you cannot sign in. Deleting this site's data in your browser also removes the saved generator form, your saved photos, favourite names and your cookie choice (the banner then asks again).
